Those plane parts are on a ranch west of Pratt Kansas on Hwy 50. It is a nice looking place. We drove around on a road that goes to another house behind the hwy house and they had a hugh pile of mulch with a head and hands sticking out of it. I’m sure the people who live there would be interesting to know.

Birds of a Feather Art Show

The Southeast Colorado Arts Council in conjunction with the High Plains Snow Goose Festival Committee will be hosting the “Birds of a Feather” Art Show starting Thursday, February 21, 2013. This art show will feature artwork from local artists and a special showing of paintings by Marie Whiting.

The three-day “Birds of a Feather” art show will be held at the Shore Arts Center on South Main Street in Lamar on the Thursday, February 21^st and will conclude Saturday, February 22nd at 4pm. All area artists are invited to show and offer their work for sale free of any fees. A maximum of three pieces of artwork will be allowed per artist. Twenty percent of the proceeds from any sales will be used by the Southeast Colorado Arts Council to defray expenses and to support the Shore Arts Center.

The lower Arkansas Valley is rich with talented artists and programs. Your continued support will allow the Arts Council to continue to work and support local artists as well as those from outside the region and beyond. If you enjoy art, would like to learn more about the creative process, and would like to support the arts in southeast Colorado, please plan to attend the Southeast Colorado Arts Council’s, “Birds of a Feather” Art Show February 21 through the 23 this year.

The Show and sale will be held at the Shore Arts Center, 115 South Main Street in Lamar, CO. Marie Whiting art collection to be featured at “Birds of a Feather” Art Show & Sale

The family of Herb & Marie Whiting recently donated their substantial art collection to the Southeast Colorado Arts Council. Marie, born “Honoria Marie Noel on March 17, 1917, lost her mother when she was only eleven months old. Raised in a convent in Maine, she quickly developed an interest in the arts and painting specifically. A self taught artist with an incredible eye for detail, Marie and Herb settled in Lamar, Colorado in 1984 for retirement. Marie quickly became active with the area senior citizens, the golf community, art clubs, and the art guild. Marie embraced many styles of art including quilting, crocheting, sewing, jewelry, ceramics, photography and painting. Many of her works included oil paintings and a small number of watercolors. Much of her work will be on display February 21-23 at the “Birds of a Feather” Art Show & Sale sponsored by the Southeast Colorado Arts Council. The sale coincides with the 11th Annual High Plains Snow Goose Festival registration activities at the Shore Arts Center-115 South Main in Lamar. 50 year anniversary of fire of the Pioneer Theatre prompts expansion of the Shore Arts Center

To coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the fire of Pioneer Theatre in downtown Lamar, The Arkansas Valley Wind & Percussion Ensemble, Inc. will be working with other arts organizations (including the Southeast Colorado Arts Council) to expand and continue to renovate the Shore Arts Center. Donated to AVWPE, Inc. in 2006, the Shore Arts Center has become a main attraction and feature to Lamar’s downtown district. The center is currently home to thriving music programs including the AVWPE concert band, the Valley Jazz Orchestra and the Take Five Jazz Quintet. The center hosts weekly square dance rehearsals with the legendary Dudes & Dames dancers led by Carla Scranton. The Southeast Colorado Arts Council hosts a varied schedule of art shows, sales, receptions and membership drives throughout the year as well. Expansion plans include a new multi-purpose dance & music rehearsal hall, studio rooms for artists, retail gallery space and much needed storage for the facility. A proposed Arts & Music History Museum will be one of the cornerstones for the new facility in the future and summer exhibits are currently planned for 2013 in the Walter-Hobbs Hall of the center. Organizers are asking for any stories, history or memorabilia that you would like to see featured at the museum within the Shore Arts Center. Old photos, recordings, instruments, dance outfits, etc. would be treasured exhibits within the museum. Tuesday-Friday, October 23-26: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

A wine and cheese reception will be held on Thursday, October 27 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Shore Art Center. Awards will be given out at this time.

A Star is Born

A Star is Born. That’s the title of the PMC Foundation’s new program. The program will feature small stars engraved with the names of new born babies, which can be purchased by parents, grandparents, or other family members, and will be displayed in the halls of PMC. PMC Foundation Director Mike Bryant said, “this is just the beginning. We hoping to put up more stars in the future. Hopefully one day people will be able to come back here and look for their star from when they were born.” He thanked PMC CEO Jim Fairchild for his help in getting the project going. The large center piece of the A Star is Born program is a silver star with long flowing curling tails which sculptor Jeremy Cooper described as, “whimsical”. Cooper

explained that he wanted the sculpture to have a “whimsical” and more childish feel to it because of what the program celebrates. Cooper is a welder by trade and lives in Lamar. More of his work can be seen on display occasionally at the Shore Arts Center. Also some of his pieces are on display in downtown Colorado Springs.
